Poetry Terms Vocabulary


Alliteration- Repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of a word



Analogy- point-by-point comparison between two things that are alike in 

some respect.



Assonance- Correspondence of sound.



Consonance- the recurrence of similar sounds in close proximity.



Ballad- Poem that tells a story and is meant to be sung or recited.



Blank Verse- un-rhymed poetry written in jambe pentameter..



Figurative Language- Language that communicates ideas beyond the 

ordinary, literal meaning of words.



Free Verse- Poetry that does not contain a regular pattern of rhyme and 

meter.


Haiku- Major form of japanese verse.


Imagery- Consists of descriptive words and phrases that recreate sensory 

experiences.


Lyric Poem- Short poem with a single speaker expresses personal thoughts 

and feelings.


Narrative Poem- Tells a story.


Ode-Poem of praise.


Rhyme- Occurrence of a similar or identical sound at the end of two or 

more words.


Rhythm-Reters to the pattern or flow of sound created by the 

arrangement of stress.


Shakespearean Sonnet- Having the rhyme scheme.


Petrarchan Sonnet- Consisting of an octave with the rhyme scheme.
